Safety Corner: Fall Fire Safety Checklist

Indoors:

  • Have your chimneys and fireplaces cleaned and inspected
  • Test smoke alarms and fire extinguishers
  • Don't overload extension cords
  • Keep ateast a 3 ft clearance around space heaters and never plug them into an extension cord. Make sure to turn them off when you go to sleep or leave the room.

Outdoors:

  • Festive fall decorations can pose an added fire risk. Keep decor away from open flames and other heat sources
  • Ensure your decorations are not blocking your home’s exits or pathways, keeping a clear escape route in case of emergencies
  • Consider using battery-operated candles instead of real candles when lighting your jack-o’-lanterns or luminaries.
  • Rake and dispose of dry leaves properly.
  • Keep outdoor cords away from standing water, and inspect them for damage before use. Do not overload outlets or power strips.
