Frederick-Firestone Fire District is Awarded International Accredited Status
The Frederick-Firestone Fire District (FFFD) has received Accredited Agency status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) for meeting the criteria established through the CFAI’s voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program. The FFFD is one of more than 300 agencies to achieve Internationally Accredited agency status with the CFAI and the Center for Public Safety Excellence, Inc. (CPSE). Only 14% percent of the U.S. population is protected by an accredited agency.
The FFFD joins 25 Colorado fire agencies that are currently accredited.
CFAI is dedicated to assisting the fire and emergency service agencies throughout the world in achieving excellence through self-assessment and accreditation to provide continuous quality improvement and the enhancement of service delivery to their communities. The CFAI process provides an agency with an improvement model to assess its service delivery and performance internally and then collaborates with a team of peers from other agencies to verify and validate its completed self-assessment.
Frederick-Firestone Fire District Board President Katie Maselbas stated that the agency’s achievement of Accredited Agency status “demonstrates the commitment of the agency to provide the highest quality of service to our community.” Maselbas also said, “We have also been able to use the Commission on Fire Accreditation International’s process as an initiative-taking mechanism to plan for the future of our community and locate areas where we can improve on the quality of the services we provided”.
The FFFD began its pursuit for accredited status when it completed a community-focused strategic plan in 2020 for 2021-2026. In the spring of 2023, FFFD officially became a registered agency with CPSE. During that time, the district completed a community risk assessment to fully understand the community's risks and demographics, as well as a standard of cover that examined how the FFFD was responding to emergency calls and mitigating those risks identified in the assessment. The final document needed in the accreditation process was an internal self-assessment of the programs and services offered by the district. In April 2025, the FFFD welcomed a CFAI Peer Assessment Team to ensure that all district documentation, policies, and procedures were being implemented. After being recommended by the Peer Assessment Team, FFFD leadership went before the CFAI commission on accreditation, and the FFFD received accredited agency status on August 5, 2025.
