Fort
Lupton Haystack Fire
Around 1400
hours, vigilant neighbors noticed and warned property owners
at 9743 Weld County Road 16 that there was smoke coming from
their hay stacks. The owners started opening up the hay in an
attempt to attack the fire but lost control of the situation.
11 fire districts responded to help put out the 3,500 tons of
burning hay. At the peak of the operation up to 12 tenders were
needed for water supply operations. Crews protected exposures
and other hay bales so they could be removed to safety. The
remaining hay was allowed to burn itself out for several days
under the supervision of firefighters and property owners. No
live stock was lost and one firefighter was treated and released
on scene. Mike Melton Photos
